9 Signs Your Bra Doesn't Fit Properly

9 Signs Your Bra Doesn't Fit Properly

Many women wear the wrong bra size without realizing it.

You may think your bra is supposed to feel tight, that straps should dig into your shoulders, or that some cup spillage is normal. But these are often signs that your bra isn't fitting correctly.

Here are nine common signs that it's time to reconsider your bra size or style.

1. The band rides up your back

The back band should sit relatively level with the front of your bra.

If it constantly rides upward toward your shoulder blades, the band may be too loose.

Because the band provides a significant part of the support, an overly loose band can make the entire bra feel less supportive.

2. The straps keep falling off

Occasionally slipping straps can simply mean they need adjustment.

But if your straps continue falling off even after adjustment, the problem may be the bra's size, shape or construction.

The straps should help position the bra — they shouldn't have to do all the supporting work.

3. The straps dig into your shoulders

Deep strap marks can be another warning sign.

It doesn't necessarily mean you need to loosen the straps. In some cases, it means the bra is relying too heavily on the straps because the band or cups aren't providing enough support.

A wider padded strap can also improve comfort by distributing pressure across a larger area.

4. Your breasts spill over the cups

If breast tissue is visibly spilling over the top or sides of the cups, the cup may be too small.

This can happen even when the band feels comfortable.

Try a larger cup size or a different cup shape.

5. There are gaps or wrinkles in the cups

The opposite problem is also possible.

If the cup has significant empty space, wrinkles or folds, it may be too large — or simply the wrong shape for your breasts.

Cup fit isn't only about volume. Different bra constructions accommodate different breast shapes.

6. The underwire sits on breast tissue

In an underwired bra, the wire should surround the breast rather than sit directly on breast tissue.

If the wire presses into the breast, digs painfully into the sides or doesn't follow your breast root, the size or shape may be wrong.

You may also prefer a different construction altogether.

7. You constantly adjust your bra

A good bra shouldn't require constant attention.

If you find yourself repeatedly:

  • pulling the cups upward;
  • adjusting the band;
  • repositioning your breasts;
  • tightening the straps;
  • or pulling the back band down,

your bra may not be providing a stable fit.

8. The bra feels uncomfortable after a short time

A bra can look beautiful and still be wrong for everyday wear.

If you want to take it off after an hour because it feels restrictive, digs into your skin or creates pressure points, consider whether another construction would suit you better.

Wireless bras can be an excellent option for women who want support without the pressure of underwires.

For example, Valmira's 1107 wireless model uses non-stretch cups, side support and padded straps to provide medium-to-high support for fuller busts without an underwire.

9. Your size seems to change every time you shop

Bra sizing isn't completely universal.

Different brands use different grading systems, and materials and construction can affect how a garment fits. Valmira specifically recommends using its own measurement guidelines and product size charts rather than assuming your usual size will be identical across brands.

What should you do if your bra doesn't fit?

Start by measuring yourself again.

For a Valmira bra, measure:

Bust: around the fullest part of your bust.

Underbust: directly underneath the bust, firm but comfortable.

Take your measurements in thin clothing or underwear and use the Valmira size chart to determine your size.

Then consider the style.

A woman with a fuller bust may find that a bra with side support, wide straps, a stable cup or a wider band is more comfortable than a delicate lightweight style.

Don't assume discomfort is normal

Your bra doesn't have to hurt to be supportive.

Support and comfort can exist together when the size, construction and materials are right for you.

If your current bra constantly rides up, digs in, spills over or needs adjustment, that's useful information — not something you simply have to tolerate.

Explore Valmira's size-inclusive bra collection and use the size guide to find a better starting point for your next fit.
